SBW Berline Scholarships: How to Apply for the 2023-2024 Academic Year

Starting in 2022, the SBW Berline Scholarship program will open applications to students who have completed at least one year of undergraduate study in any subject field. The application process will be very similar to the one used this year, and it’s important that you review this guide carefully if you intend to apply to the SBW Berline Scholarships program in 2022-2023. As one of the most prestigious scholarship programs in the world, only around 100 students will be accepted each year and receive full-tuition scholarships along with their housing, textbooks, and living expense

SBW Berlin supports educational projects all over the world. With our SBW Berlin Scholarship, we contribute to the international advancement and dissemination of education and knowledge.

The SBW Berlin Scholarship supports young people from abroad who have a financially disadvantaged family background and use the skills they acquire during their studies in Germany to boost long-term non-profit projects, preferably in their home countries.

Scholarships Programs Covers in SBW Berlin

Host Institution: Universities in Berlin or Potsdam, Germany.
Field of Study: Available programs at host universities.
 A number of awards: 20 scholarships. However, the program can award as many scholarships as there are vacancies.
    Duration: Minimum of 30 days and a maximum of 48 months, depending on the standard duration of studies in the discipline you have chosen.
    Target group: Open to citizens of Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America.

SBW Berlin Scholarships For International Student's Benefits 

SBW Berlin bears the necessary living expenses of the scholarship holders for the duration of their scholarship. A full scholarship includes:

1.  a room in shared student flats in Berlin
2. cost-of-living allowance in the amount shown below. In the first semester, the scholarship holders receive a living allowance of €450. In the following semester, the scholarship holders can receive a living allowance of up to a maximum of 550 euros per month. The amount of the grant depends on the rating of your project and will be calculated as follows:
        95 – 100 points 550 Euro
        90 – 94 points 500 Euro
        85 – 89 points 450 Euro
        80 – 84 points 425 Euro
        75 – 79 points 400 Euro
        70 – 74 points 375 Euro
        60 – 69 points 350 Euro
        50 – 59 points 325 Euro.

3. tuition fees
4. possibly also a travel allowance for your journey to Berlin before the start of your studies and for the journey home after you have completed your studies.

First payments can only be made after the scholarship holder moved into the student flat.

SBW Berlin Scholarships for International Students Eligibility

To apply for this university scholarship program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • applicants must be
  •  Foreign nationals, whose home countries appear to have a particular need for development assistance. This applies particularly to many countries in Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America due to their current economic and/or social situation
  • Homeless foreigners
  •  Recognized refugees
     
  • Holders of a settlement permit
  •  Holders of an EU long-term residence permit
     
  • Students from EU and EEA countries who have already worked in Germany in an activity related to their studies, before taking up their studies
           
  • Students from EU/EEA countries with a permanent right of residence as defined by the Freedom of Movement Act (Freizügigkeitsgesetz EU).
       
  • between 18 and 30 years old
       
  • average grades correspond with a German grade point average of at least 2.0
       
  • application before the start of their university education or fully enrolled in the first, second, or max. third semester at a state-recognized university (in Germany or abroad) or application for a Master’s degree shortly before or after obtaining a Bachelor’s degree
  • able to prove that they have not stayed in Germany for more than 18 months before the application
  • no first-degree family members who reside permanently in Germany
     
  • strong intention to work in their country of origin for at least 18 months after graduation
       
  • professional or Volunteer experience in the non-profit sector and
  • able to prove a relatively low net income.

Applicants who do not meet all the requirements stated above cannot be considered.

How to Apply for the SBW Berlin Scholarships for International Students

Eligible applicants who would like to apply for this scholarship must submit their application package via email to [email protected]. The application package is composed of enclosed certificates and supporting documents in German or English. Documents in other languages must be translated into German or English.

Applicants must submit at least the following documents:

  1. application form
  2. letter of motivation (one or two pages long)
  3. current curriculum vitae. The CV is already included in our application form and does not have to be submitted as a separate document.
  4. copy of the last school or university certificate that shows the grade point average and a grade overview
     
  5. copy of the highest academic degree (high school diploma or university certificate) that shows the grade point average and a grade overview
  6. information about the net household income.

If available, copies of the following documents should also be included:

  • qualification for university entrance
  • admission of the university in Berlin or Potsdam where you intend to study (or are already studying)
  • internationally recognized language certificate for the language in which your studies will be.

Only complete applications can be considered. During the first phase of the selection process, the curriculum vitae, the letter of motivation, and the grades of the applicants will be considered. For any inquiries, please click here to contact the scholarship provider.

Each year, applications are received from May 15th to June 30th and November 15th to December 31st. The final decision on whether a scholarship (starting the following semester) will be granted can be expected at the beginning of August respectively the beginning of February.
